Blue Herons Guarding

This picture clearly conveys an attitude of wariness, a trait not uncommon amongst our feathered friends. These Blue Herons are guarding something, or at least watching us very closely. Although I started out sketching realistic views of herons, this painting took its own path and became very expressionistic. It has been one of my most popular.

Dos Pelicanos

Now this one was just plain fun! I painted this in northern Mexico, while beach-camped on the Sea of Cortez. These pelicans were sitting on a boat anchored out in the surf in front of us, and they were acting goofy, bobbing their heads at each other, flapping huge outstretched wings, and waving those long yellow beaks around like swords. I mean, pelicans are strange looking anyway, right? But the funniest part was when they would stare at each other for long periods, slowly nodding at each other, those improbable beaks flopping up and down, up and down.... I watched them for hours, and when they finally relaxed, I saw this attitude of friendliness or brotherhood (or comraderie or something akin to that) and wanted to paint that part of them. So, we got two smiling pelicans, or in spanish "Dos Pelicanos."

Talking Toucans

I love painting pairs of critters, because it helps me relate to a more intimate and focused relationship, and that's where we often find attitude. These colorful Toucans are in a conversation, with the larger bird obviously giving sage advice to the youngster, whether wanted or not. This is acrylic on a 24 x 36 inch stretched canvas.
